Timbavati Trip Report

Updated: Jul 13, 2019

At the beginning of June my guest Heidi Crundwell and I spend 6 nights at the wonderfully rustic Umlani Bush Camp in South Africa's Timbavati Private Game Reserve.

The goal of this trip was, for Heidi to maximise photographic opportunities in a relatively short space of time. In my experience the best way to do that is to spend as much time in one particular area as possible. knowing the Timbavati well and what it offers, I though this would be the best place to spend the best part of a week.

The first drive of the safari started with a bang. Not long out of camp we got word of a leopard with a cub which we headed straight to. What greeted us was pure Loweveld magic.

This set the tone for the remainder of the safari. For the next 6 days we enjoyed numerous sightings of the Big 5 and has some incredible photographic opportunities.

As you can see we enjoyed some truly wonderful sightings. If you want to see some "proper" photography from this 6 day safari then please head over and check out Heidis Instagram account Heidicrundwellphotography or check out the image and text below.

“ I was keen to expand on my african wildlife photography and so contacted Matt to help me get back out there. I explained what I wanted from the trip and he was brilliant in putting it all together for me.

Timbavati was fantastic, we had so many great sightings everyday and Matt was always on hand for photography tips and made sure I was in the best possible spot. A moment that really stood out for me was an afternoon spent in a tree house situated at the side of a waterhole. A few elephants came down to drink then I looked behind me and a whole herd were arriving. In the end we were surrounded by about 40 elephants! There were babies and adults all enjoying a dip, cooling off from the midday heat, it was such a special moment.

The leopard and lion sightings were incredible and really allowed us to get some close intimate shots of these beautiful cats.

Matt was a great guide and great company and it is a trip that will stay with me forever! “
